ONLINE CATALOGUES

Newton

Newton is the online catalogue for the libraries of the University, including Cambridge University Library and its dependent libraries, and most faculty, departmental and college libraries. For full details on how to search using Newton refer to User Guide to Newton which can be picked up in the library or downloaded from the library website.


Copac

Copac is accessed under Resources/Catalogues on the library website. Copac® is a union catalogue. It provides free access to the merged online catalogues of 24 major research libraries in the UK and Ireland plus the British Library, the National Library of Scotland, and the National Library of Wales/Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru. If you cannot find an item in Cambridge use this to check and see if it is available elsewhere. It is also a useful place to check for correct forms of title etc.


Zetoc

Zetoc is accessed under Resources/Catalogues on the library website. Zetoc provides access to the British Library’s Table of Contents. Its date range is from 1993 to the present day and is updated daily. It covers approximately 20,000 current journal titles and 16,000 conference proceedings. You can use your ATHENS username and password for off-campus use and for logging in to the alert system. Using Zetoc is relatively straightforward. Go to the homepage and follow the link on the left hand side. If you want to download copies of references you have found you will need to open up Endnote to download into.

Zetoc Alerts

Zetoc proves an alerting which alerts you by e-mail when references you are interested in are loaded onto the Zetoc database. Setting up Zetoc alerts is relatively straightforward. Go to the homepage and follow the link on the left hand side. Log in to Zetoc alert

Example I - A general search

  • You can enter details for searching by:
    • Topic
    • Author/Inventor
    • Patent Number
    • Patent Assignee
    • Source Title
    • Conference/Meeting Information
    • Address

  • Full abstracts available for all indexed articles
  • Access to corresponding author’s emails is possible
  • Analysis of results feature

Example II - A cited reference search

  • This useful for:
    • Searching for articles that have cited a particular work or author
    • Use this for searching backwards and forwards in time
  • Useful facts to know:
    • You can set up alerts from journal articles or saved search histories
    • Full-text links to journals available via Cambridge are now available
  • Search hints:
    • Wildcards – geol* - finds geological, geology
    • 4 logical operators can be used– in this order if using all of them!
      • SAME - means that the linked terms must appear in the same sentence
      • NOT
      • AND
      • OR
    • starts from 1970

Georef - accessed through GeoScienceWorld

GeoRef is the American Geological Institute's geoscience database containing over 2.2 million records of North America since 1785, and other areas of the world since 1933. The database is the equivalent of four major reference publications:

  • Bibliography of North American Geology
  • Bibliography and Index of Geology Exclusive of North America
  • Geophysical Abstracts
  • Bibliography and Index of Geology

Additional items come from special bibliographies produced on request for state surveys or societies, and annual subject and author indexes.

Intute

Intute: Science, Engineering and Technology Database is a free online service providing you with access to the very best Web resources for education and research, evaluated and selected by a network of subject specialists. The database currently contains 33072 records.

SciFinder Scholar

SciFinder Scholar provides pathways to published research in the world's journal and patent literature–virtually everything relevant to chemistry plus a wealth of information in the life sciences and a wide range of other scientific disciplines back to the beginning of the 20th century. N.B. You will not be able to access this site without a Raven username and password.

OpenDOAR

OpenDOAR is an authoritative directory of academic open access repositories. Each OpenDOAR repository has been visited by project staff to check the information that is recorded here. This in-depth approach does not rely on automated analysis and gives a quality-controlled list of repositories.

Online Journals are accessed under Resources/e-journals(link?). Here you can access all the e-journals that the Earth Sciences Library subscribes to plus many more.
