Searching for a MAP using Newton
By default we select the Universal Catalogue as this broadens the scope of the search (this is useful for hard to find materials), but you can restrict your search to the Dept A-E Catalogue
Before you start open the Universal Catalogue in a new web browser window so that you can see it side by side with this.
-
Select i) Search for: if not already selected
Task 1
-
Enter map? AND spain in the [Search text box]
-
From the ii) Using: column select Boolean Search
Using a ? as a ‘truncation’ symbol allows you to search for all words that begin with the letters preceeding the questions mark. In this case the search will not only include "map" and "maps" but also "mapa" whihc is very useful for our Spanish example.
As you'll note over 4000 results are returned and sorting through them might not be the best use of your time. Try to REFINE your search by including more local place names.
In this case try the following: leon AND map? and spain - There's no need to return to the search page just add "leon" in the Find this: box and click submit
Note: If you have an index map (see Geopubs for indexes) try a search for the index sheet number and name using a Boolean search
For example: Pola de Gordon, 13-7 103 - hint: the system doesn't like hyphens
To see search construction look at the end of this page.
Task 2
-
Search for maps of Cumbria, using Ambleside as a keyword to narrow down your search.
Note that if you are searching for maps in the University Library Map Room you can use the GUIDED SEARCH option and conduct a Subject Search, making sure the central column is set to: "all of these" (more details in the UL Map Room or on their website).
Alternatively you may wish to browse the maps in the Map room. You must always ask the Library staff for permission to use the map room.
Search construction: Pola AND Gordon AND 13
