Guides to finding references

By default we select the Universal Catalogue as this broadens the scope of the search (this is useful for hard to find materials), but you can restrict your search to the Dept A-E Catalogue

Before you start open the Universal Catalogue in a new web browser window so that you can see it side by side with this.

SEARCHING FOR REFERENCES ON YOUR READING LISTS

TASK 1 - FINDING A BOOK:

Putnis, A.(1992) Introduction to Mineral Sciences, CUP

Start with Search

For titles where you have specific details one of the quickest routes is to enter the author name and one or more significant keyword from the title in a Boolean search:

E.G. putnis AND mineral

You can also try the Title search but if a word is missing or mis-spelt in the reference you could be unsuccessful. (All title searches are left-anchored!)

EXERCISE 1

Using the boolean search method find the classmarks for these books:

  • Putnis, A.(1992) Introduction to Mineral Sciences CUP
  • Dickin, A.P. (2005) Radiogenic Isotope Geology

TASK 2 - FINDING CHAPTERS/ARTICLE IN EDITED BOOKS OR JOURNALS

Objective: To understand how to locate articles in edited books or series in the Library using Newton

References that you are given that are chapters or articles contained in a book or series with others on a similar topic or theme will look something like the following (Expect to see slight variations due to people using different citation guidelines):
You need to look for clues that will tell you what to search for:

Example:

Walker, R.G. & Plint, A.G. 1992. Wave- and storm-dominated shallow marine systems. In: Walker, R.G. & James, N.P. (eds). Facies Models: response to sea level change, Geol. Assoc. Canada, p. 219-238.

In: This is a BIG clue that this is an article contained IN a volume of chapters/articles by different authors and edited by one or two main contributors.

  • Walker & Plint= author(s) of the article contained IN the volume
  • Wave... = title of the article contained IN the volume
  • Walker & James = Author/Editor of the whole volume – use this name(s) to search by
  • Facies... = Title of whole volume & use this title to search by

EXERCISE 2

Using the information above, break down the following references into their most useful components parts and try searching for them using a BOOLEAN search and then a TITLE search.

Note: This reference also includes a series title: Spec. publ. geol. soc. London. You can search in Newton for the series title instead of, or as well as, the editor and volume title

ANY CLASSMARK BEGINNING WITH EASJ. IS SHELVED AS IF IT WERE A JOURNAL. LOOK FOR THE SERIES TITLE.
