Searching for a JOURNAL TITLE using Newton
Newton tells you whether we have the journal title and whether we have the volume you want. You cannot search for individual articles in Newton
By default we select the Universal Catalogue as this broadens the scope of the search (this is useful for hard to find materials), but you can restrict your search to the Dept A-E Catalogue
Before you start open the Universal Catalogue in a new web browser window so that you can see it side by side with this.
Contents:
- Task 1: Searching for a known journal title
- Task 2: Searching for an abbreviated title or one you may not be sure is correctly cited - Do this task right now
TASK 1 - If you know the full title of the journal
- Keep i)Search for: as your selection from the screen on the right
- Select ‘Journal title’ in the 'ii)Using:' column
- Enter the title of a journal in the Search text box For this example try the Journal of Petrology - omit the article 'the' (if it is at the start of a title) in your searches as generally Newton will not recognise it
- Click on the Search button
RESULTS: Three entries are present for Journal of Petrology - Click on the first title result to get a very detailed record of library holdings. Scrolling down the screen the record gives the following information:
- Location information – tells you the Library or Libraries it is in
- Classmark - this lets you know the journal's location in a library
- Electronic link - if it exists
- Which items are on loan
- The most recently received print issues
To view the information on your other search results simply scroll down to the top or bottom of the screen and click on right arrow to go to the next record. In this case you will see the catalogue entry for the online version of the journal.
EXERCISES:
Using the method described above find the classmark and the latest issues received for these two journal titles:
- American Mineralogist
- Journal of Metamorphic Geology
TASK 2 - Abbreviated journal titles
Often a reference will only have an abbreviated journal title and you may not be sure of the full title. Newton can cope with this.
- Select i)Search for: if not already selected
- Select ‘Boolean Search’ in ii)Using:
- Select ‘Journals’ from iii)Quick Limits drop-down list
For this example we'll be using this abbreviated journal title: Geol. Soc. Am. Bull.
- In the Search text box type the part of the title you know
- End each incomplete word with a question mark - The question mark means that the word you are searching for is truncated and the system will search for anything beginning with the letters entered
- if you have more than one abbreviated word add as many as you want but you must include the word ‘AND’ between each word and the question mark after each word
Click on search to see the results or click on the button below to see how your search should look
EXERCISES:
Using the method described above find the class marks for the following journal title:
- Earth planet. sci. lett.
- Ann. Rev. Earth Planet. Sci.
- Geochem. geophys. geosyst.
