Computing Facilities and Support

In addition to the facilities offered by the centrally run Computing Services, the Department of Earth Sciences has excellent computer facilities, available for both research and teaching, within the Department. All of our computers are connected to the Departmental and wider Cambridge network, and then to the internet via JANET.

The Department has more than 50 public computers (mostly PCs running Windows and Linux, and a number of Macs) running a wide range of software packages together with printers (b/w, colour and an A0 plotters), scanners and a fully backed up central filestore.  They are located in various teaching labs on both sites (Downing Site and Bullard Labs) and the Library (Downing Site) with one room dedicated for research students (also Downing Site).

The Department also has a wireless network for mobile users and facilities for high throughput computation.
