Fieldwork Safety
All fieldwork planning must include arranging insurance, writing a risk assesssment and giving your contact details.
Fieldwork abroad needs a contact in the host country to comply with BS 8848 regulations.
Copies of this information must be given to:-
- the Departmental Administrator, Andy Buckley (ab78),
- the Principal Technician Martin Walker (mgw21) and
- students must also have these documents agreed by their supervisor.
Supervisors are responsible for seeing these are in place at the planning stage for all their Part II and III students' field mapping projects and their research students as well as their own fieldwork.
Undergraduate fieldtrip participants must complete and return the confidential safety/medical form in order to attend each course. You can download it here and return it to the Principal Technician, Mr Martin Walker or the Safety Administrator, room S034. Ensure you have read the Fieldwork Code of Safe Practice and Good Conduct.
Fieldwork Safety Training Sessions
These sessions are given for all undergraduate fieldtrips at the appropriate times – e.g. the geological field mapping safety session for Part II undergraduates will be held 17.00-18.00 on 23rd February 2012 and 14.00-17.00 on 25th April 2012
The next fieldtrip safety training for leaders will be given by Marlin Training on the 17th February 2012.
Driving on Fieldwork
All drivers, whether using University vehicles, hire vehicles or their own car, must be suitably qualified and deposit a copy of their driving licence and relevant documents with the Principal Technician, Martin Walker. Drivers on Fieldtrips take Advanced Driver Training. Stringent regulations exist for driving vehicles carrying undergraduates, so if you would like/need to drive on a fieldtrip, contact JavaScript must be turned on for you to be able to see this address or the Safety Administrator well in advance (room S034).
Contacts
Host contacts for fieldwork abroad for Part II mapping projects and for research must be left with your supervisor and the Department Administrator, Dr Andy Buckley.
Risk Assessments
Risk assessments must be completed before leaving and copies left with Andy Buckley, Lucy Matthews and your supervisor.
