Use of Laboratories (PROCESS)

All workers must follow this PROCESS to use labs in the department

Permission from Head of Section

Read all codes of safe working practices, out of hours working regulations and appendices

Organise what is needed for your analyses or experiments

  • Allow sufficient time to complete experiments safely, preferably during normal working hours
  • Write out the plan of your work, discuss with your supervisor and then Head of Section

Chemical Hazard Risk Assessment must be completed and signed by Head of Section

  • Existing risk assessments may be used or amended if following an existing procedure
  • If your experiments are different from what has been done before, you will need to complete a new risk assessment for it
  • Ask the Head of Section or Local Safety Officer for assistance

Equipment – some items or facilities may need to be booked or ordered

  • Consult with the Head of Section or local safety officer if you are unfamiliar with the operation of any tools or lab equipment
  • Do not modify any lab equipment without permission of the Head of Section

Space is at a premium. Ensure you have been allotted a clear area for your work

Safety – ensure you know what Hazards, Risks and Control Measures are associated with your work and the lab in which you will be working 

The Risk Assessment must be discussed and signed by you, your local Safety Officer and the Head of Section.

If you will be in the laboratory outside the Department working hours of 9am – 1pm and 2 – 5pm, you must fill out a working out of hours form and have it signed by your Head of Section.

Advice, training and personal protective equipment (suits, safety glasses etc) will be provided by the local Safety Officer who will check your risk assessment and procedures and has the authority to stop you working in a lab if you do not follow all safety rules.
