Magmatic Processes and Volcanology
Melting is a fundamental process on our planet and has shaped our surface environment. Our research spans from studying volcanic eruptions to magma storage and melt transport in the crust to mantle melting.
We employ a range of techniques, including petrological and geochemical observations and measurements, analogue experiments, geophysical methods (seismology, geodesy) as well as field-based approaches.
Cambridge is a founding member of The UK Centre for Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Tectonics (COMET). Our volcanologists and seismologists collaborate with international partners to monitor recent volcanic eruptions in locations such as Hawaii, Iceland, and La Palma. These efforts also aim to collect data that can help mitigate future hazards.
We have a dynamic Cambridge Volcanology Group, which is spread across multiple departments and centres within the University.
