Department of Earth Sciences

On Saturday 17 May, Cambridge's Department of Earth Sciences welcomed 150 alumni to Madingley Rise for a vibrant day of talks and demonstrations, culminating in a formal dinner.

Held for the first time at Bullard Laboratories, the event offered alumni and their guests the opportunity to explore a site steeped in scientific discovery and integral to the Department’s legacy.

The day began with a warm welcome from Head of Department Professor Marie Edmonds. Highlights included a compelling historical overview of the Bullard Labs by Professor Dan McKenzie, alongside talks on carbon sequestration, energy storage research, volcano seismology, and student mapping fieldwork.

Guests explored the picturesque grounds through guided geological walks, toured the Sedgwick Museum’s new research collections centre, and participated in lab demonstrations visualising volcanic flows and hydrogen storage.

The afternoon concluded with a relaxed garden reception, before attendees gathered for a formal dinner at Downing College.
