On the 15-16th April, Cambridge’s Department of Earth Sciences hosted a workshop broadly focused on the latest developments in critical metals research, with a particular focus on rare earth elements (REEs).
The event brought together around 35 international geoscientists working in the critical metals space. Researchers from across the Department showcased their critical metals research spanning diverse fields such as geophysics, tectonics, geodynamics, petrology, volcanology and isotope geochemistry.
This marks the second workshop on the theme organized by Owen Weller’s research group at Cambridge, following a previous event in September 2023. The meeting was supported by Weller’s UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship grant, which is funding his team’s investigations into the geological conditions that lead to rare earth enrichment in alkaline and subalkaline igneous complexes.
