A recent panel discussion involving Andy Woods, professor at the Department of Earth Sciences and head of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Flows, explored how research across the University is enabling cleaner fuels and the smarter use of materials and resources.
Andy Woods discussed his research on the potential for heat storage and re-use to transform energy systems; from storing heat in underground aquifers to capturing waste heat from data centres and using it to warm homes. His work shows how smarter thermal management can cut emissions while making better use of energy we already generate.
Panellists also included Dr Rafia Nimal from the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, who discussed the role of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier, and Prof. Alex Routh from the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology who spoke about reducing energy losses in transport and industrial systems.
The session was chaired by Professor Stuart Clarke from the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry.
