On 10th July at 11:45, Professor Helen Williams will present the prestigious Paul Gast Medal Lecture at this year’s Goldschmidt Conference in Prague. The lectureship is awarded to a mid-career scientist for outstanding contributions to geochemistry.
Titled “From Hard Rock to Heavy Metal: High-Mass Stable Isotope Adventures in Mantle Geochemistry,” the lecture will explore how Earth’s deep interior—particularly the silicate mantle—drives planetary chemistry, tectonic activity, and even influences habitability.
Williams will spotlight cutting-edge research using high-mass stable isotope systems, a growing frontier in geochemistry. These novel tracers are revolutionizing how scientists decode mantle dynamics and the intricate exchanges between Earth’s mantle, crust, and core.
Her talk will also consider how these advances reshape our understanding of Earth’s evolution—and what they could reveal about other rocky planets across the solar system.
