The core mission of the Department of Earth Sciences is to educate and develop scientific understanding of the Earth, our environment and planetary systems.

We place fundamental science at the heart of addressing present and future societal challenges, with a particular focus on supporting the transition to a carbon-neutral future, delivering sustainable and responsible access to the Earth’s natural resources, and understanding and mitigating environmental risks in a changing world.

Our aims are fully aligned with the University’s recent statements on divestment and contribute towards the University’s aim to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2038. Achieving a rapid energy transition is absolutely critical to combatting the climate crisis, but cannot be achieved without positive engagement between academia and the energy industry.

Our commitment to supporting the transition to net zero is demonstrated by our work in several areas including, but not limited to, studies of past, present and future climate, the sustainable management of Earth’s resources critical to the renewable economy, and carbon capture and storage.
