Geoscience in Context is a seminar series and discussion group in the Department of Earth Sciences that intends to broaden departmental understanding of geoscience’s place in society, the history of the subject, its modern practice and its role in shaping the future. The series aims to provide human context for the scientific research of the department, and to provide a safe, open and supportive forum for discussion of these topics. For more details, and the code of conduct please see: https://www.esc.cam.ac.uk/about-us/geosciences-in-context Talks will be via zoom, with the talk part live streamed to facebook (via the Geoscience in Context group). A recording of the talks (though not the discussion will be available after the event).

Mon 17 May 15:00: The Green Transition in Natural Resources

Fri, 30/04/2021 - 09:13
The Green Transition in Natural Resources

Over the past century global demand for natural resources has led to unsustainable, socially-unjust and environmentally-disastrous practices of resource extraction. Now in the depths of a climate and ecological crisis, we are faced with the necessity of transitioning from a hydrocarbon-fuelled, mining-intensive society into something altogether more sustainable within the next decade. This panel discussion brings together experts from outside of the geosciences, with the aim of exploring the ramifications of a ‘green transition’ for natural resource extraction. We will discuss questions such as: can extraction ever be sustainable, to what extent are technological developments key to sustainable extraction, and how can new ways of extracting and using natural resources promote social and environmental justice?

  • Speaker: Panel discussion: Pippa Howard (Flora and Fuana International) and Andy Whitmore (London Mining Network)
  • Monday 17 May 2021, 15:00-16:00
  • Venue: Zoom.
  • Series: Geoscience in Context; organiser: Oliver Shorttle.

Fri 12 Mar 13:00: The Future Green Economy: Panel Discussion

Fri, 12/03/2021 - 15:08
The Future Green Economy: Panel Discussion

The geosciences played a key role in the hydrocarbon-fuelled economic boom of the 20th Century, and it is now poised to play an equally-key role in the transition to a green and sustainable economy. This presents a new opportunity for Geoscientists to engage with the social, political and ethical implications of the green economy and their research into green technologies. This panel discussion brings together three experts from fields outside of the geosciences to explore questions such as: how the green transition can facilitate reduced carbon emissions and social justice, whether the green economy will be structurally different to the current economic system, how should we measure activities’ green credentials, and how will societies be convinced of green economics?

  • Speaker: Prof. Gargi Bhattacharya (Professor of Sociology at the University of East London), Kate Metcalf (Co-director of the Women’s Environment Network) and Dr. Natalie Jones (Research Associate at the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Existential Risk)
  • Friday 12 March 2021, 13:00-14:00
  • Venue: Zoom.
  • Series: Geoscience in Context; organiser: Camilla Penney.
